During the attack, ten-year-old Byron risks his own life to rescue Marie Rosa, the girl who will become the love of his life. These formative experiences instill in him a lifelong commitment to protecting others and confronting injustice.

Running parallel to Byron's journey is the story of James Earl Ray. Rather than portraying Ray as a one-dimensional villain, the novel explores the failures, resentments, and circumstances that shaped him, tracing his descent toward becoming the assassin history remembers.
